March 13, 2025 – Arlington Heights, IL – In response to concerns about possible stranger danger incidents involving local students, the Arlington Heights Police Department (AHPD) actively participated in two Community Safety Meetings hosted by Arlington Heights School District 25. The meetings took place at Thomas Middle School and Westgate Elementary, providing an opportunity for law enforcement to address community concerns, share investigation updates, and offer safety guidance for students and families.
AHPD officials discussed recent reports from students who believed they were being followed by a black truck. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the vehicle was in the area for legitimate business purposes, and no criminal intent was involved. While the report was ultimately deemed unfounded, the AHPD reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring community safety and conducting rigorous investigations whenever concerns arise.
Although the recent incident was not considered a direct threat, AHPD emphasized the importance of proactive safety education. Officers outlined best practices in handling suspicious activities, including conducting interviews with witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, leveraging modern technology like License Plate Reader Cameras, and working with local businesses and community partners.
To promote child safety awareness, AHPD shared key safety tips with parents and guardians, including:
-
Always be aware of surroundings and trust your instincts.
-
If approached by a stranger, avoid engagement and move to a safe place.
-
Travel in groups when walking to school and carry a mobile device.
-
Report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult or the police immediately.
-
Parents of younger children may consider GPS tracking devices for added safety.
-
Identify and map out the safest route to school.
AHPD also highlighted its investment in crime prevention technology, such as the Camera Registry Program, which enables residents and businesses to register the location of their security cameras. This voluntary initiative helps officers locate potential video evidence in case of an incident, enhancing public safety measures.
The department expressed gratitude to School District 25 Superintendent Dr. Brian Kaye, district staff, and the Board of Education for prioritizing student safety and fostering collaboration. AHPD also commended community members who reported concerns and cooperated with law enforcement, reinforcing the shared commitment to keeping Arlington Heights safe.
