A Des Plaines man was killed and a teen injured in a crash Saturday afternoon in Arlington Heights. Police say a speeding BMW M340i T-boned a Jeep Grand Cherokee at Lake-Cook Road and Bloomington Avenue around 4:30 p.m. The impact caused the Jeep to roll over multiple times before stopping in the parkway.
The driver of the Jeep, 69-year-old Rafael G. Mercado, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he died early Sunday. The BMW’s driver, an 18-year-old man, and two other teens refused further medical treatment, though a third passenger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the crash, and officials plan to access vehicle data to determine contributing factors.
