Donkey Inn is a nearby watering hole like no other. Established in 1932, this neighborhood saloon started as a barn that turned into a tavern in the middle of farmland – back when donkeys roamed Palatine. According to server Karen McGraugh, people brought their donkeys into the bar, and that’s how it got the name.
Today, a grittiness remains in the venerable space that is 360 degrees of wood adorned with scenic murals and Old West signs. Enter the Donkey to find a warm, casual spot calling “come as you are.” Outdoor seating was recently added at the front, near the bright orange sign that many pass and ponder. A vast menu of American fare is sure to please a variety of tastes.
Serving breakfast all day, the kitchen rustles up omelets, skillets and pancakes whenever there’s a hankerin’. Order rye toast and it’s the Old World marble variety. Try the chorizo skillet with a fried egg on top. Bloody Mary’s include the “Donkey Side Kick”, a mix of Kettle One and Zing Ling, with bacon added to the garnish, and a shot of Miller Lite on the side.
Donkey Inn is a rarity in these parts for its Friday Night Fish Fry offering walleye pike in addition to the more common perch and cod. The beer-battered and fried perch is all you can eat, while the walleye pike is a 9-ounce filet, and both come with a choice of sides.
The half-pound “Kick Ass Burger” is topped with jalapeno jack cheese and guacamole, with salsa and jalapenos on the side, and a choice of side including fries, waffle fries or tater tots.
The place is either bustling or laid back with a few regulars at the bar. Sports fans enjoy the many big screens and parents appreciate the roominess for kids to be kids. Highchairs are available, but not a changing table. Ample parking includes handicapped spaces adjacent to the front and back entrances. Guests in wheelchairs are seen regularly and enjoy the table set-ups. Rebecca Prentice adds, “Our daughter has autism and this environment works perfectly for us, so we’re regulars.”
Matt Murphy, Palatine resident and former state senator spotted with family and friends at the Donkey, shares, “It’s great for local character.”
