Police officers and a union have sued the Village of Arlington Heights, alleging a new ordinance is an unlawful attempt to prevent unionization.
The Core Issue: A recent Illinois state law allows officers who must take a written test for promotion to unionize. Arlington Heights police sergeants were seeking to form a union under this law.
The Village's Action: In response, the Village Board passed an ordinance that removes the written test requirement for sergeant promotions and changes who handles those appointments. The lawsuit claims this was done specifically to reclassify sergeants as supervisors (who cannot unionize) and strip them of their new rights.
The Accusation: The union president calls this a "blatant union-busting tactic" designed to silence the officers. The suit argues the ordinance violates the Illinois Constitution's Workers' Rights Amendment.
The Village has declined to comment on the pending litigation.
