Village of Arlington Heights Compensation Post Flagged for Privacy Violation

A recent post I made on Nextdoor discussing the raise, bonus, and contract extension of Village Manager Randall Recklaus in Arlington Heights was flagged and removed for an alleged privacy violation. The information I shared was legally obtained through public records, including Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, yet it was still deemed to have violated Nextdoor’s community guidelines. Nextdoor’s guidelines restrict sharing personal and private information, but the removal of my post has raised concerns about how the platform moderates content. After noticing the removal, I contacted Nextdoor’s support team to appeal the decision, explaining that all the details in my post were public records, even providing the FOIA request number and village sources to support my case.

To my surprise, I received a response within four hours. However, the reply appeared to be a generic, scripted response stating that my appeal was denied because my post violated community guidelines. The response failed to address the fact that the information I shared was publicly accessible and legally obtained.

Unfortunately, my appeal was unsuccessful, and this incident highlights broader concerns about how Nextdoor moderates content. I’m not the only one who has encountered issues with biased or inconsistent moderation on the platform. Many users have reported similar experiences, and a major concern is the lack of transparency regarding the training and oversight of Nextdoor’s volunteer moderators. It remains unclear whether these moderators are held accountable for enforcing guidelines fairly and without bias.

Concerns about unfair moderation aren’t limited to Nextdoor. I’ve also faced restrictions from the Daily Herald, which operates an Arlington Heights community Facebook page. Despite following all community guidelines, my posts are now subject to additional scrutiny and must be approved by an administrator before being published. I believe this restriction is a direct result of my outspoken views on Arlington Heights matters and my critiques of the Daily Herald itself.

This situation raises important questions about selective enforcement and the potential for bias on online platforms. As social media continues to shape public discourse, ensuring fair and transparent moderation practices is crucial to maintaining open discussions on important community issues.

If you also feel that there is unfair bias happening either with Nextdoor and/or the Daily Herald, feel free to let them know. Your voice matters in ensuring fair and open conversations in the community.
